I have often driven rental cars in foreign countries where it made more sense than taking public transportation. As a member of AAA at home, it allows me to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) for $20 USD, which is valid for a year (and must be used within six months of the desired effective date). People have often asked me why I get one, when it is not a requirement. Here are a few reasons that it is a good idea to carry an IDP:
- It is a valid form of identification in 150 countries worldwide, containing your name, photo, and driver information.
- It translates your identification information into 10 languages. So, even if you don’t speak the language of the country where you are going to be driving, the IDP information will most likely be understood by someone in that country.
- Most countries highly recommend it, even though it is not mandated.
You can visit a local AAA office to obtain one. Or mail a completed application and required photocopy documents to the nearest AAA office or their Headquarters. For more information, go to: https://www.colorado.aaa.com/travel/idp.
